I´m Vegan

One morning, the screams of a murder reached me.
The asphyxia on a fishing boat I also could feel.
A cry of help from a laboratory.
A deep voice from a raw animal dying.

One evening, I thought all this was so insane,
that my life doesn´t need anymore other´s pain.
There´s no need to use them, or even love them,
just respect them.
That´s the way I´m a vegan today.

One night, I understood it wasn´t sufficient.
Is not enough for being consequent.
Facing each other in the dusk,
I knew his life was in my hands,
he looked at me right in the eye,
and I can swear he barely speak
groans of despair imploring liberty.

Set me free.
Break the bars.
Don´t be scare.
No more slaves.
Let me live.
Make yourself an activist.

Soy vegan@

Un día llegaron hasta mí los gritos de un matadero.
Sentí la asfixia en la red de los barcos pesqueros,
una petición de auxilio desde un laboratorio,
la voz profunda de un animal despellejado.

Una tarde pensé que todo era una locura,
que mi vida no necesita más el dolor de otros,
no hay que usarlos ni tan siquiera amarlos,
sólo respetarlos, por eso hoy soy vegan@.

Una noche entendí que no era suficiente,
aún no soy consecuente.
Mirándonos el uno al otro en la oscuridad
supe que su vida estaba en mis manos.
Él me miró y juro que pude oír cómo pedía libertad desesperadamente:
"libérame, libérame, libérame, rompe los barrotes, no tengas miedo, no más esclavos, haz de ti un activista".
