"Don't Tell Me" es el single principal del segundo álbum de Avril Lavigne, "Under My Skin".
En una entrevista en 2007 Avril dijo lo siguiente: "Cuando estaba escribiendo 'Don't Tell Me' estaba pensando en cómo era ser una chica y tenía diecisiete años cuando escribí esa canción, así que eso era fresco en mi mente. Acababa de salir de la escuela secundaria y hay mucha presión para las chicas en esos días, estoy feliz de poder decirle al público que esta canción trata de ser fuerte y que va dirigida a todas las chicas".
Avril dijo lo siguiente en la MTV: "Se trata de ser fuerte. Hay muchos chicos que solo quieren llevarte a cenar y luego, basicamente ir a casa y 'unhh'. Así son muchos chicos y creo que las chicas necesitan ser fuertes y no dejar que ningún chico las presione para hacer algo".
