La canción comparte similitudes con el sencillo de octubre de 2018 "Without Me", sobre su ex-novio G-Eazy y su infidelidad. En un tweet después del lanzamiento de "You should be sad" Halsey insinuó que esta canción también trataba sobre G-Eazy.
