Sobre 'Try Not To Breathe'
"Try not to breathe" es una canción melancólica sobre preferir la muerte en lugar de sufrir, muy probablemente una de las más tristes de R.E.M. Está inspirada en la Guerra Civil y, de hecho, uno de los instrumentos que utilizaron es de aquella época, el dulcémele.
A veces, ni siquiera los miembros de la banda conocen la historia detrás de las canciones que interpretan. La verdad está solo en la mente del compositor, en la mente de la persona que era en el momento de que compuso la pieza, que muchas veces desaparece llevándose todos los significados.
Aunque "Losing my religion" no estaba relacionada de forma directa con la religión, en "Try not to breathe" sí influyeron los antecedentes religiosos del compositor, Michael Stipe. Las letras de muchas canciones famosas esconden secretos que la mayoría no imagina, y la confesión de Paul MacCartney sobre lo que propició la letra del tema Let it Be, es un ejemplo de ello.
