Según Marcus Gray en It Crawled from the South (1996, pág. 261), Stipe finalmente se abrió sobre la canción en 1991, diciendo "Harbourcoat is rewriting of The Diary of Anne Frank".
Si lee literalmente, la canción podría ser sobre una pareja en Rusia tratando de encontrar el abrigo de la mujer para que puedan salir. Pero, de nuevo, podría tratarse de cualquier cosa.
