Sobre 'Someone Saved My Life Tonight'
"Someone Saved My Life Tonight" fue el único gran éxito de Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. Entró en el top 25 de la tabla de sencillos del Reino Unido, y falló por poco al ser el noveno número uno de John en Canadá.
Contrariamente a la creencia popular, la canción no trata del infame intento de suicidio de Elton John, sino más bien de romper su compromiso con Linda Woodrow, que era su prometida en 1968. El "alguien" en cuestión es Long John Baldry, que en ese momento trabajaba con Elton John como parte de la banda Bluesology.
Aunque Elton John no salió como bisexual hasta un año después del lanzamiento de la canción, y no se describiría a sí mismo como gay por otra década, es fácil leer esta canción como que trata de las ansiedades de John sobre el matrimonio a nivel institucional. Las referencias a estar atado y atado implican que es sólo algo en lo que él entraría en contra de su voluntad, y las menciones de la hipnosis juegan con los tropos comunes de la hipnosis como una seducción coercitiva. En el documental Two Rooms: Celebrando las canciones de Elton John y Bernie Taupin, Elton explicó la inspiración de la canción: "Iba a casarme una vez cuando era más joven, salí y me emborraché con Long John Baldry, Bernie y John me dijeron que no me casara. Sabía que tenía razón, pero no sabía cómo salir de esto, así que me emborraché, fui a casa y dije que no me casaría".
