La estrenó en vivo en Nueva York en Le Poisson Rouge el 6 de agosto. Más tarde estrenó el tema en KCRW.
Lorde habló de lo que inspiró esta canción en un concierto: "Escribí esta canción un lunes de febrero, después de ese fin de semana donde mi hermana y yo organizamos una gran fiesta en mi casa. Era ese tipo de fiesta en la que la gente se come todo lo que tienes en tu nevera y en el congelador, como también descongelan cosas en tu microondas... Al final, todos se durmieron en mi casa, en el suelo de cada habitación. Y hubo un tipo que vino después de que se apagaran las luces.... se acostó conmigo y con mi mejor amigo en mi cama, y no podía dormir. Y él dice: '¿Qué es?' y yo dije:'Lo que acabamos de hacer es genial. Está bien, hacer esta fiesta en casa, es de adultos. Y hay algo que asusta en hacer algo que está en un mundo diferente al que conoces".
Lorde canta con la misma voz profunda y ahumada que se muestra en su portada de "Swingin' Party" y luego cambia a una voz más joven y alta en los coros.
"Ribs" es un lamento etéreo que se estresa por envejecer. Lorde ha dicho que le gusta especialmente la canción.
