El intermedio de la canción fue grabado por el guitarrista Eddie Van Halen.
"Beat It" es una de las primeras incursiones de Jackson en el género del rock, y habla de saber cuándo retirarse de una pelea. Se dice que representa el desprecio de Jackson por la violencia. El tercer sencillo del sexto álbum en solitario de Michael Jackson, Thriller (1982), "Beat It" se convirtió en Platino y es una canción reconocida internacionalmente que ha tenido una gran influencia en la cultura pop.
El famoso guitarrista Eddie Van Halen contribuyó con el solo de guitarra de forma gratuita, según Wikipedia. Cuando el productor Quincy Jones lo llamó, Van Halen le colgó tres veces, pensando que era una broma. Al día siguiente fue al estudio a grabar la canción.
